Essentially an emissions inventory is a detailed listing of emission estimates of pollutants discharged to the atmosphere categorised by source type, time period and specific location. 

Governments, national and regional, develop emissions inventories as a means of assessing the nature of pollution in their area of responsibility, and for planning and policymaking purposes. 

Large-scale regional inventories such as the Air Emissions Inventory for the Greater Metropolitan Region in NSW, which PAE played a direct role in developing seek to indentify all natural and man-made sources of air pollution. 

Through the inventory, the government is able to measure emissions of harmful pollutants, pinpoint sources of emissions, and evaluate the results of anti-pollution policies. 

Further, by understanding the sources of emissions and where they are emitted to – air, land or water – policies and strategies can be developed to address the impact of pollution.
The ultimate goal is to create a cleaner and healthier environment. 

Inventory development is the key to effective greenhouse gas management. In this area, PAE is well placed to help organisations account for and report on greenhouse gas emissions. We can help set business goals and define appropriate organisational and operational boundaries, identify greenhouse emission sources, collect activity data, choose an approved calculation approach, and develop a corporate emissions inventory.

When commissioned to develop an emissions inventory, PAE generally performs some or all of the following tasks:

• Review all emission sources and source types
• Design emission estimation techniques
• Identify, acquire and process data for each type of emissions
• Collect data through consultation, direct response mail-outs and telephone surveys
• Design and develop data management systems
• Review and vet emissions estimates
• Document the emissions inventory estimates in a report
• Prepare the user manual and provide user training.

Emissions typically inventoried include those from off-road sources, mobile sources, industrial/commercial sources, domestic sources and biogenic sources.
