The Leading Practice Sustainable Development Program for the Mining Industry has just released a handbook on Airborne Contaminants, Noise and Vibration, prepared by a Working Group which included Robin Ormerod of PAEHolmes, who has almost 30 years experience of addressing air quality issues associated with mines. Drawing also on extensive mining industry experience of other PAEHolmes founders and staff, Robin contributed primarily by writing material on air emissions assessment, monitoring and management.

The handbook includes information on topics relevant to the whole mining life cycle as well as a variety of case studies from Australian mines. As stated in the handbook’s introduction, air and noise emissions arguably generate more complaints and opposition than any other environmental aspect of mining. Hence, the handbook should prove useful to many both within and outside the industry.

The Leading Practice program is funded by the Australian Government Department of Resources, Energy and Tourism. The current round of handbooks updates similar publications that were released around 1998
