Petroleum operations emit a range of pollutants that are the products of combustion or other thermal processes. They may also store materials for production purposes that can be the source of harmful or nuisance substances released to air.
Moreover, development of new sites also involves activities such as earthmoving, excavation, construction, handling, stockpiling and conveying – all of which are potential sources of emissions, particularly dust and other particulate matter.
Sites are also required to quantify and report annually to the NPI if the emissions they release to the atmosphere trigger reporting thresholds.
In summary, we provide a range of environmental consulting services to the petroleum industry. These services include:
-
Impact assessments – assessing impact of emission from proposed new sites or expansions of existing sites
-
Project management – managing an environmental impact study, which may involve bringing together a team of specialist for each area of the study’s terms of reference.
-
Site and process optimisation – e.g. we carry out scenario modelling using dispersion modelling to enable cost-benefit analysis of, say, building a chimney versus modifying processes to reduce ground level concentration of pollutants.
-
Developing predictive schemes - enabling operations to mitigate odour impacts by better modulating operations to weather conditions to. Such schemes would involve predicting weather conditions relevant to plume dispersion and operation of a system to communicate essential information to the plant operators.
-
Odour assessment – to evaluate odour management plans, and to assist sites in address odour complaints from surrounding communities
-
Producing NPI reports – Our skills in emissions estimation enables us to efficiently quantify emissions from sites and to compile annual reports to the standards required by the National Pollutant Inventory. We would use site-specific inputs in conjunction with default emission factors to compile the emissions reports. We are skilled in all the emission estimation techniques required by the NPI.
Our client in this field include Caltex, Comalco, BP, Shell and Southern Pacific Petroleum.
