Landfills

We have carried out numerous air quality assessments relating to landfills, particularly in South East Queensland.

Odour from municipal landfills is generated by the decomposition of organic matter within the waste stream, especially under anaerobic conditions. In addition, other environmental issues may include fugitive emissions of landfill gas, noise, litter and dust.

The assessment studies we carry out help our clients:

  • Determine appropriate separation distances between facility to sensitive receptors such as residential areas and schools
  • Gain developmental approval from planning authorities
  • Prepare environmental management plans
  • Address community complaints on emission such as odour and dust
  • Apply suitable mitigation measures and technology
  • Examine possible alternative land usage beyond the facility buffer zone

A typical air quality study may involve the following scope of work:

  • Running dispersion models to assess potential offsite odour impacts
  • Managing odour sampling projects
  • Identifying environmental values in accordance with relevant regulations
  • Assessing local meteorological conditions and characteristics of the local area (e.g. prevailing winds and terrain features) that may affect dispersion of emissions
  • Developing or reviewing a facility’s environmental management plans
  • Conducting regular odour assessments
  • Recommending odour management and mitigation measures.

In addition to air quality studies, we have also provided expert testimony in cases in the Planning and Environment Court relating to landfill emissions.
