Agribusiness

The agribusiness sector, which includes intensive livestock industries such as poultry, pig farming and cattle, is one of our key markets. We have extensive experience and expertise in helping site managers address emission issues, especially with regards to odour.

Typical odour assessment projects would involve:

  • Performing odour sampling and analysis
  • Carrying out field surveys
  • Estimating emissions based on site-specific data or published data
  • Modelling meteorological impacts
  • Assessing predicted odour emissions by comparing with relevant regulatory criteria
  • Reporting results and recommendations
  • Advising on odour mitigation measures and technologies
  • Advising on farm management practices aimed at reducing odour emissions

We have worked on numerous agribusiness sites in many locations throughout Australia and especially in NSW and South East Queensland. Our clients seek our services when they are expanding their operations, addressing community odour complaints, and when seeking development approval. We are also called upon to provide expert witness in court cases in the Land and Environment Court involving disputes over odour emissions.

Our comprehensive assessments enable farm managers to implement best practice management techniques, optimise shed designs, and apply proper separation distance to avoid odour nuisance at sensitive receptors.

In addition to site projects, we have also developed models for estimating odours and provided best practice advice to industry bodies including the Rural Industries Research and Development Corporation (RIRDC), Australian Pork Limited, Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA) and the Queensland Chicken Meat Council.

For the poultry industry, we developed the first odour emissions model capable of accounting for the effects of bird numbers, bird growth, weather conditions, housing designs and management practices. This model has been instrumental in encouraging poultry farmers to adopt best practice methods as they are able to assess the odour impacts of various management methods.
