Traffic Emission Projects

Independently, as PAE and as Holmes Air Sciences, we have completed many projects in the transport sector. These have included the following:

Roadways and Tunnels

M2 Motorway

  • Western Sydney Orbital
  • Eastern Distributor
  • M5 - East Motorway, Lane Cover Tunnel
  • Brisbane North-South Bypass Tunnel
  • Brisbane Airport Link
  • City Link (Melbourne)
  • LCE (Singapore).

Airports

Airport projects include:

  • New parallel Runway at Brisbane Airport
  • Air quality assessment for the Sydney Airport Masterplan.

Other projects include the following:

Peer Review of Western Ring Motorway, Auckland NZ

As PAE, we conducted a peer review of a screening air quality assessment for the proposed Western Ring Route in Auckland, NZ. This project sought to relieve congestion and provide quicker and safer travel across the region. Three design options were considered and the original report considered the potential air quality impacts of each option. PAE's review was undertaken with reference to:

  • The New Zealand Ministry for the Environment’s Good Practice Guide on Assessing Discharges to Air from Land Transport
  • The New Zealand Ministry for the Environment’s Good Practice Guide for Atmospheric Dispersion Modelling
  • The AUSPLUME User’s Guide.

Technical Review of Air Quality Modelling on Eastlink Project, Melbourne

We conducted a technical review of the air quality modelling and report  for the proposed Eastlink project in Melbourne. The Project is a tollway comprising 3 through traffic lanes and includes bypasses, interchanges, intersections and 1.5km of twin tunnel. At each end of the tunnel there is a ventilation building and ventilation stack. In the review, we assessed pollutants, air quality goals, emissions estimation techniques, calculations, modelling methodology and accuracy, and overall technical soundness of the original assessment.

Study Relating to Tunnel Vent Stacks for the Lane Cove Tunnel

An air quality study was performed on tunnel vent stacks for the Lane Cove Tunnel. The study examined the effects of venting emissions through the two tunnel vents at the preferred locations selected in the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), and specifically examined the suitability of a variety of stack heights, stack diameters and flow rates for design purposes.

Assessment for Proposed Child Care Centre

To determine the likely impact of traffic emissions on a proposed child care centre in inner-city Brisbane, we modelled and assessed road traffic emissions from a local road network .

Assessment of VOC from Service Station

We conducted dispersion modelling and assessed air quality for an existing service station in Brisbane to predict VOC emissions.

Assessment of Air Quality at RAAF and Civilian Airport, Townsville

We assessed emissions from relevant sources at the airbase including aircraft, ground support equipment, diesel generators, fuel storage and automotive fuel retailing.

Quantification of Emissions from Port Facilities (Central Queensland Port Authority)

For the CQPA, we prepared an inventory of air emissions from port facilities (e.g. excavators, ships, fuel storage, rail) using NPI methods.

Quantification of Greenhouse Gas Emissions (Gunns Pulp Mill)

We assessed greenhouse gas emissions including rail and road transport using AGO and GHG Protocol methods.

Review of Best Practice Planning for Vehicle Emissions in Urban Areas (NSW DEC)

We reviewed national and international planning practices and development of best practice planning guidelines for vehicle emissions along land-based transport corridors and in transient-oriented centres.

Ferry Trial Emissions Testing using ULSD and Biodiesel Blends (Sydney Ferries)

We conducted biodiesel emissions testing study of an SFC vessel using ultra low sulphur diesel and two blends of biodiesel (B20, B80).
